The first group of walkers, walking the full Dales Way footpath, were identified by us last week. They had problems when they encountered the damaged footbridge over the river Mint, officially closed, and with no instructions as to where to go. Cumbria County Council close footpaths and roads, but accept no responsibility to indicate or mark alternative routes. I was aware of this after the second storm, and since the footbridge was closed, first locally, then officially, I have been trying to work with the landowner as to how best to manage our proposed alternative route over public footpaths, one of which passes through his farm.
With the news that walkers were now out and about, I asked CCC Access officer Geoff Fewkes assistance. We visited the site today and placed our maps at each end of the diversion. We also agreed with the farmer to way mark a temporary permissive path around the area where his daily milking takes place. This path is marked in blue on the map above.
All these notices have now been posted.
