Dales Way Floods. Update 12th February 2016

Sprint Mill Bridge. Latest.

This bridge has now been classed as a High Priority bridge requiring significant repairs. A design solution is due to be approved in 2 to 3 weeks with a likely reopening in April 2016.

Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority have restored the Dales Way footpath  from Birks Mill to the A683 back to normal [almost] by fencing off the slumped field edge as well as the field, and erecting two stiles to enable walkers to rejoin the A683 in the normal place. Well done the YDNPA Team

The Dales Way Association had a committee meeting on January 14th 2016. Whilst discussing the December floods, it was agreed that the most serious incident was the closure of the foot bridge over the river Sprint leading into and out of Sprint Mill cottage into Burneside, 1 kilometer away. Our original advice was to revert to the old Dales Way footpath i.e. crossing the road bridge over the river Sprint 150 meters downstream. Within days this was also closed to vehicles and pedestrians due to structural damage.

CCC have issued this recent picture of the Sprint Mill footbridge to illustrate the serious nature of the damage to justify their reason to close the footbridge, which we accept.

Dales Way Flood Update 11th January 2016

On the 6th January 2016 we have been informed by CCC that the bridge over the river Sprint carrying the road into Burneside has been declared unsafe and is closed to vehicles and pedestrians. The Dales Way footpath which crosses the river Sprint and proceeds through Sprint Mill Cottages 300 meters back, is also closed, due to the closure of the footbridge.

The only alternative route we can recommend on this date, is that when you reach the turn off to Oak Bank, you turn left on to the minor  Gillthwaiterigg Road leading to the road bridge over the River Mint then on to Kendal. From there take the train or bus to Burneside.

These bridges will be repaired at some time in the future, but the Authorities cannot give us any dates at present. When we get this information it will be on our web page  at  – on the Home page and News.
